What Makes Cobot Programming Unique?

With advancements in technology and machine learning enhancing the capabilities of cobots, they are becoming more efficient and more autonomous, with the ability to learn from their environment and the humans they work with.

Unlike industrial robots which are often large, fixed in place, and require total programming if a task changes, cobots are highly flexible and adaptable through a range of programming methods. Working closely alongside humans, cobots can carry out a range of tasks to streamline processes and production.

While we talk a lot about the capabilities and benefits of collaborative robots, one question often still remains. How do you program a cobot?

The Difference Between Robot and Cobot Programming

Traditional industrial robots require a lot of knowledge and time to program. And once set up, they can only perform a few actions.

Programming a robot to execute tasks often involves writing complicated code and programs that very few have the expertise to carry out. Combine this with high purchasing and installation costs, many SMEs simply don’t have the resources to automate with robots.

Collaborative robots however have a number of unique aspects, such as their compact size, rapid deployment and ability to work with human operators, that see them becoming hugely beneficial to a range of industries. One of the biggest advantages of working with cobots is that they are a great deal easier to program than traditional robots and machinery. The vast majority of cobots can be easily programmed by anyone, particularly those with no prior experience of robot programming, making them much more accessible. The ease of cobot programming allows for a wider application of automation technology to support business and industry growth.

Most industrial robots are difficult to manoeuvre, cannot stop suddenly in the event of an emergency, and are programmed for a task before they are installed. Cobots however are agile, can be programmed to detect objects and people to enhance safety, and can be reprogrammed several times in a day if the need arises. Rather than integrating one robot to carry out one task, one cobot can be integrated to carry out several tasks across the shop floor.

Programming Cobots

Cobots are inherently user-friendly, with intuitive programming interfaces allowing workers without specialised programming skills to set up and manage the cobot. By making cobot programming simple, it allows innovative automation technology to be implemented into a much broader range of settings while also reducing the hesitation in adoption for SMEs.

Like most machines, cobots can be programmed using a variety of techniques, the most common being:

Programming interface: cobots come with graphical user interfaces (GUIs), or teach pendant, for easy setup, configuration and programming. These GUIs often use drag and drop functionality and simple instructions to shorten the learning curve and programming and increase accessibility.

Direct interaction: cobots can be programmed by physically guiding them through a task with lead-through programming. Operators can manoeuvre the cobot’s arm and guide it through a series of movements, with the cobot recording the movements to be replicated later.

Real-time adjustments: using intelligent sensor technology, cobots can make real-time adjustments based on changing conditions in their environment. They can detect obstacles and hazards, adjusting their speed or even stopping if they detect an unexpected presence, significantly contributing to workplace safety.

As a Certified System Integrator for Universal Robots, Cobots Online utilises the latest technology to support our customers with their cobot integration and throughout their automation journey. PolyScope has been the leading cobot software since collaborative robots were invented to speed up simple tasks and make complex ones possible. There are currently two versions of PolyScope, with PolyScope 5 providing unlimited possibilities to automation, and PolyScope X centralising the most important features with templatisation for ease of use.

The all new UR Developer Suite, released summer 2024, gives you all the tools you need to turn your ideas into real cobot applications. UR Developer Suite combines a range of tools and solutions, including developing URCap and URScript, adapting end-effectors and integrating hardware.
